WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health held a hearing about the future of the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06), the Ranking Member the Subcommittee on Health, called on Congress to extend funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) before the end of the year at the hearing.

Hamburg, Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), urging the agency to evaluate the safety of oral care products, such as toothpastes and gum, that contain polyethylene microbeads. Accounts from both consumers and dental professionals suggest that these small bits of plastic, which are not biodegradable, may get lodged in crevices between the teeth and gums, trapping bacteria and potentially threatening oral health.

This bill would authorize the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to crack down on bodybuilding products that contain chemical compounds known as anabolic steroids which are often deceptively marketed as dietary supplements.

The bill received bipartisan support and passed out of the Energy and Commerce Committee in July. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced a companion bill in the Senate, S. 2746, in July that is currently before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
