April 20, 2004

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), founder of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, will host a congressional briefing this Thursday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m. with Bhopal survivors and Goldman Environmental Prize winners Rashida Bee and Champa Devi Shukla. Pallone will also show a short documentary film that brings to life the horror of the Bhopal disaster and its aftermath.

Washington, D.C. --- In a letter last week to President Bush, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, voiced strong opposition to the Bush administration's decision to abandon a 2001 agreement to provide parity in military funding to Armenia and Azerbaijan. The letter comes in response to testimony by a U.S. State Department official that the Bush administration would support a greater level of military assistance to Azerbaijan than Armenia.

"If the Bush administration wants to place blame on the condition of our nation's air, it has no better place to look than the mirror. While some of New Jersey's air pollution is created within the state's borders, we all know that much of our state's pollution comes from large power plants outside New Jersey. Over the past three years, the Bush administration has done everything it can to weaken federal emission regulations on coal-burning plants that negatively impact our state's air.

Long Branch, NJ --- One week after the British government finally released a six-month old report from a former Canadian Supreme Court judge recommending independent and public inquiries be conducted into the murder of Pat Finucane and several others, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today urged British Prime Minister Tony Blair to immediately order a full, independent, public inquiry into Finucane's murder.

Asbury Park, N.J. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) said the federal government should be doing more to help state and local governments address the increasing disparities in health care for our nation's minority populations. On April 13, the New Jersey congressman met with public health officials, healthcare professionals and patients at the Community Health Center of Asbury Park (CHCAP) to hear how the Center and other community groups are working to confront this growing problem.

Long Branch, NJ --- Following up on disturbing reports that Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan not only sold nuclear equipment to North Korea, Iran and Libya but also visited a secret underground nuclear plant in North Korea, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today strongly urged President Pervez Musharraf to allow U.S. Intelligence agencies the opportunity to interview Dr. Khan in person. Pallone's request came in a letter sent to the Pakistani president today.

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today secured $2 million in federal funds for the U.S. National Park Service to construct a ferry terminal and pier on Sandy Hook that will help to alleviate traffic and reduce pollution at the park.

Pallone said the funds will be used to construct a floating and fixed pier. When completed, the ferry will connect Sandy Hook to lower Manhattan and other NY/NJ ferry terminals. The Sandy Hook ferry will service the 2.5 million annual recreational visitors to the park.

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today secured $10 million in federal funds to complete improvements to the rail, bus passenger, and parking facilities at the South Amboy Intermodal Transportation Station and for the construction of a parking garage at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick.
