Pallone Applauds Decision to Protect New Jersey Fishing Industry in Striped Bass Management
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) released the following statement after the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Striped Bass Board decided to maintain current management measures for 2025, following his recent letter urging fair treatment for New Jersey’s fishing industry:
"I’m glad the ASFMC Striped Bass Board chose to maintain the status quo for 2025. The proposed seasonal closures would have devastated New Jersey’s fishing industry. This decision ensures a balanced approach to rebuilding striped bass stocks while protecting our state’s fishermen.”
"The new addendum process, with opportunities for public input, is the right path forward to manage the stock fairly. My letter to the Board emphasized the need for a regional approach that reflects New Jersey’s unique coastline and fishing practices—I’m pleased to see this perspective was considered."
On December 10, 2024, Pallone sent a letter to ASFMC Executive Director Bob Beal urging the board to adopt management measures that treat New Jersey’s fishing industry equitably. In his letter, Pallone highlighted the importance of regulating New Jersey as a separate region, citing the state’s distinctive coastline and fishing practices. He also pointed to the successful use of similar frameworks for Summer Flounder stock rebuilding as a model for striped bass management.
