UMDNJ Awarded $647,654 Grant to Improve NJ Public Health Care Services
September 14, 2010
UMDNJ’S School of Public Health and Medical Schools will partner with the New Jersey Public Health Training Center to provide training for public healthcare workers and to address the unique health issues of medically underserved communities.
“For a long time UMDNJ has set the standard in New Jersey for educating future doctors, nurses and other health care providers,” said Pallone. “This grant will continue to provide the best possible training and education for UMDNJ students. Communities that rely on the services provided by public health centers will also benefit tremendously.”
“The UMDNJ-School of Public Health is delighted to be included as one of the 27 new centers to be funded and will use the funds to connect recently trained students with experienced workers and provide a variety of short course updates for workers, including training in the area of effective program evaluation,” said George Rhoads, Interim Dean of the UMDNJ School of Public Health. “In a particularly exciting initiative, we will be sending interdisciplinary teams of students to public health agencies to perform service projects while at the same time learning about practical issues in public health practice. We applaud Chairman Frank Pallone Jr. and his colleagues in Congress for their leadership in this critical area.”
This project will also address the impending shortage of public health workers and broaden the scope of training available to the existing workforce. The award was funded through the Prevention and Public Health Fund established through health care reform legislation.
