Pallone Statement on Sessions Appointment to Attorney General

November 18, 2016
Press Release

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr., (NJ-06) issued the following statement in response to Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) being nominated to serve as U.S. Attorney General by President-elect Trump.

"It is clear that Senator Sessions’s appointment will only deepen the tensions and divisions that President-elect Trump flamed during his campaign. Senator Sessions’s history of racially-charged remarks, his resistance to updating the Voting Rights Act, criminal justice reform and his opposition to bipartisan calls for immigration reform are deeply troublesome for the nation’s top law enforcement officer in charge of defending civil rights laws. I have heard from constituents throughout my district who are deeply concerned about the hate-filled rhetoric that fueled President-elect Trump’s campaign. This appointment, along with selection of Steve Bannon as the White House’s chief strategist, sends a dangerous message. I continue to call on the President-elect to work to bring our country together rather than deepen divisions.”
