Pallone Statement Regarding Trump Response to Charlottesville Terrorist Attack

August 14, 2017
Press Release

Long Branch, NJ - Today, Congressman Frank Pallone issued the following statement about the tragic events that occurred this weekend in Charlottesville and the President’s failure to adequately respond:

“The unfathomable white supremacist demonstrations and deadly violence that occurred this weekend in Charlottesville are antithetical to American values, and poses a serious threat to our society.  My heart goes out to all of the victims, including the three who lost their lives: counter-protester Heather Heyer and officers Berke M.M. Bates and H. Jay Cullen.  They will not be forgotten.

“The silence out of the White House in the aftermath of these events was deafening, but it unfortunately was not surprising.  President Trump has been warmly embraced by the KKK, neo-Nazis and other violent white supremacist groups, and advised by their associates who serve on his senior staff.  This weekend’s response showed just how far their rot has spread.  These entities must be purged like the toxic waste they are – clearly and conspicuously.  Instead, the President abdicated leadership at a moment he could have unified the country.  While he has since attempted to fix his egregious mistake, it is too little too late.

“The President is taking our country backwards, and we must reverse course without delay.  I stand with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who have condemned the President’s weak-throated response and called out those responsible for exactly what they are: white supremacist domestic terrorists.  We must work together to defeat this toxic ideology and the violence it provokes, with or without the President’s assistance.  I will continue to do all I can to ensure that happens.”
