Pallone: The Shore is Back in Business
Long Branch, N.J. – Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. Thursday announced that Jersey Shore businesses are up and running in the wake of Hurricane Irene. Pallone met with local merchants at Pier Village in Long Branch to see how business is going and to gauge merchants’ outlook for the remainder of the tourism season.
“Today our Jersey Shore businesses are open and will continue to serve visitors this season,” said Pallone. “Thankfully, Hurricane Irene spared Asbury Park, Long Branch and many other coastal towns from severe damage. Fishing and party boats are back on the water and the surfing conditions are still the best on the East Coast. I encourage people not to cancel vacation plans and to still take advantage of the many days at the beach that are left to enjoy.
Hurricane Irene caused significant damage along the East Coast from Vermont to North Carolina and also in New Jersey. North Jersey residents endured the brunt of the storm in the state in the form of flooding.
Tourism is a significant force in New Jersey’s economy. Last year people visiting New Jersey spent $35.5 billion which supports over 500,000 jobs.
New Jersey businesses are tremendously resilient but it’s important to continue to invest in the entrepreneurship that makes our towns and neighborhoods unique Pallone added.
