Pallone: Shark River Inlet Dredging Project Begins

June 27, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr., Monday announced the start of dredging at the Shark River Inlet in Monmouth County. The dredging, which began earlier this week, will be conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers and continue for 10-11 days to improve the safety and accessibility of the inlet.

“I have fought for this funding every year because I know how important this and other similar infrastructure projects are to the Shore,” said Pallone. “The start of this dredging project cannot come soon enough and will immediately benefit those who plan to enjoy the Shore throughout this boating season.

The Army Corps of Engineers will perform maintenance dredging at two areas frequently affected by shoaling (sediment buildup at the bottom of the river that decreases the water's depth). Approximately 30,000 cubic yards will be removed from the entrance to the inlet. This project was funded through the fiscal year 2011 budget.

Pallone has been a long-time advocate of ensuring continued access to this inlet. In response to previous requests from Pallone, the Shark River Inlet has been dredged on average every six months going back to 2006. The inlet is located in Monmouth County and separates the communities of Belmar to the South and Avon-by-the-Sea to the North.
