Pallone Secures $300,000 for South Amboy Transportation Project
Washington, D.C. --- U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today announced that he has secured $300,000 in federal funds to support construction of the second phase of the South Amboy Intermodal transportation project. The funding will provide for the construction of high-level platforms at the South Amboy train station.
The funds, which Pallone requested earlier this year, were included in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2007 Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development (TTHUD) Appropriations bill, which passed the U.S. House last night. It will now move to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
The New Jersey congressman said the project continues a two phase project. Recently, Phase I was completed, which consisted of the construction of a pedestrian overpass. Phase II provides a high-level platform and other needed facilities to bring the station into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Both federal and state funding will be used to complete this program.
These funds will have a significant positive impact on continuing the improvement in the overall transportation flow in the region, Pallone said. "By bringing this facility into compliance with the ADA means that all citizens will have access to all of the different kinds of transportation available at the South Amboy facility."
Last year Pallone secured $1 million to begin the construction of the elevated platform to dramatically improve safety, add handicapped accessibility and facilitate overall upgrades to the transportation system.
