Pallone Praises Department of Commerce Decision to Declare a Federal Fishery Resource Disaster in New Jersey
WASHINGTON DC – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) today released the following statement praising the decision of the Department of Commerce to declare a fishery disaster in New Jersey, which Pallone advocated for in a letter to Acting Secretary Rebecca Blank this week. This determination will enable New Jersey’s fishing industry to receive federal disaster assistance following Hurricane Sandy:
“Hurricane Sandy devastated New Jersey, and the impact will be felt by our residents and businesses for a long time, particularly those that depend upon the ocean environment and marine life. I commend the Department of Commerce and Acting Secretary Rebecca Blank for declaring a Federal Fishery Resource Disaster in our state so our fishing industry and the infrastructure that supports it will receive much-needed assistance as we work to recover and rebuild from the storm.
“New Jersey’s commercial and recreational fishing industries are vitally important to the state’s economy. I am glad the Department of Commerce heeded my request and declared a fishery disaster so our fishermen and related business can receive assistance to recover and continue to be a strong economic force in the state."
