Pallone Announces Old Bridge Residents To Have Improved Beach Access

Washington, D.C. – In response to several requests, Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-06) Monday announced that EPA will relocate the fence that surrounds the Raritan Bay Slag site. The Old Bridge mayor and area residents requested the placement of the fence line that included the Laurence Harbor Waterfront Park area be revaluated because it blocks access to the beach in Old Bridge.

“This decision has a significant impact on the ability of residents to enjoy the waterfront area in Old Bridge,” said Pallone. “I commend EPA for being responsive to this request and working with the best interests of both public health and public use.”

The EPA decided to move the fence 70 feet closer to the water, opening the beach area for use by the residents. Old Bridge officials will meet with the EPA to determine when the fence will be moved.

“I thank Congressman Pallone for working with the EPA to increase access to our waterfront,” said Old Bridge Mayor Jim Phillips. “On behalf of Old Bridge we are glad that parts of the waterfront have been restored for public enjoyment.”

EPA conducted extensive soil testing and has conceded that the original location of this fence was arbitrary at the time it was erected. EPA’s soil sampling in the previously fenced of beach area was recently completed.
