Pallone Announces Crime Prevention Grants for New Brunswick; Asbury Park

August 23, 2011

Washington, D. C. - The United States Department of Justice awarded crime-prevention grants to New Brunswick and to Asbury Park, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. announced on Monday. The funds, $130,936 for New Brunswick and $80,606 for Asbury Park, are from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.

"Crime prevention is one of law enforcement's best means of fighting crime," Pallone said. "At a time of budget problems for most cities, the federal funds are valuable and important resources that will be put to good work."

The Justice Department allows grant recipients flexibility in how the funds are used. New Brunswick will use the money to purchase police cars and to pay the partial salary of a crime analyst. Asbury Park will buy an automated license plate reader, crime mapping software and computer equipment.

Both cities will share the grants with other nearby jurisdictions, helping the communities work together to maximize the impact of their anti-crime efforts.

"The goal of the JAG awards is to enhance law enforcement and increase public safety," said Pallone. "The police departments in New Brunswick and Asbury Park do a great job. They deserve this support."
