***Media Advisory*** Pallone and Others to Officially Open New Sandy Hook Multi-use Pathway

October 27, 2004

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) will join Sandy Hook Superintendent Richard Wells and other local elected officials at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, October 29 to mark the official opening of the new Sandy Hook Multi-Use Pathway.

The New Jersey congressman was instrumental in securing the $1.8 million dollars in federal funding used for the path's construction. The 5.5 mile path connects the southern park entrance to the ferry dock at Fort Hancock at the northern end of the park and is available for use by walkers, joggers, skaters and bicycles. The design of the path is intended to improve safety, enhance visitor recreation and to provide alternate transportation access.

An estimated 200,000 bicyclists visit Sandy Hook each year. The new path will allow more people to safely enjoy the park and reduce conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles on the roadway. Future construction plans include connecting the path to area trails outside the park and including a bicycle and pedestrian path along the new Rt. 36 bridge to be constructed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
