Congressman Pallone Presents NJ Students with Congressional Medal for Service to their Communities

June 16, 2016

Washington, D.C., - Today, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) presented three New Jersey students, Nishi Shah of Edison and Trevor Somers and Richard Stelfox of Monmouth Beach, with the Congressional Award Gold Medal at a ceremony on Capitol Hill. The award is Congress’ most prestigious award for youth, earned by demonstrating civil leadership and strong personal development within their communities. Medalists achieve this merit through completing over 400 hours of community service, 200 hours each of personal development and physical fitness as well as a four consecutive night expedition.

“I’m pleased to honor Nishi, Trevor and Richard with the Congressional Gold Medal and I commend their extraordinary service to our communities,” said Pallone. “Whether it’s helping to make New Jersey’s history more accessible, fighting hunger or assisting our doctors and nurses, they are examples of the best of our country and I look forward to seeing their accomplishments in the future.”

Nishi Shah, of Edison, volunteered for the museum dedicated to Thomas Alva Edison by greeting visitors, working in the gift shop and helping with tours. An assistant teacher at her former preschool, Nishi gained the value of education for her personal development requirement, in addition to publishing a novel. Nishi improved upon her skills in Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance, for her physical fitness portion. In a four-night exploration of New York City, Nishi was able to explore a new environment.

Trevor Somers, a Monmouth Beach native, worked as a volunteer increasing awareness of hunger on a state, local, and federal level. Through his work as a part time soccer referee, Trevor was able to demonstrate personal growth in addition to setting and accomplishing several physical fitness goals. Trevor spent four nights engaged in European history and culture as a part of his exploration segment.

Richard Stelfox, also of Monnmouth Beach, engaged in civil leadership by volunteering for Riverview Medical Center working the front desk and assisting nurses on regular floors. For three years Richard held a job at Booskerdoo Coffee and took piano classes to expand his personal development. Richard also participated in wrestling, soccer and tennis to improve upon his physical fitness. Both Richard and his father backpacked Dinkey Lakes Wilderness in the Trinity Alps of California for his adventure.
