Pallone Secures $850,000 For New Brunswick Traffic Safety Improvements

July 8, 2024

Washington, DC – Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-06) has secured $850,000 in community project funding for traffic and pedestrian safety enhancements at the intersection of Jersey and Van Dyke Avenues in New Brunswick. This funding will improve safety at one of the city's most dangerous intersections by installing new LED traffic signals, accessible sidewalks and ramps, enhanced pavement markings, and high visibility warning signs.

"Securing this funding is a crucial step toward prioritizing safety at one of the city's most hazardous intersections," stated Congressman Frank Pallone. "By installing new LED traffic signals, accessible sidewalks and ramps, enhanced pavement markings, and high visibility warning signs, this project will significantly improve safety for motorists and pedestrians alike. Investing in these upgrades is essential for reducing accidents, enhancing traffic flow, and ensuring everyone can navigate New Brunswick’s streets safely."

Van Dyke Avenue serves essential community facilities, including two New Brunswick Public Schools, the New Brunswick Housing Authority's main office, and residential complexes such as Robeson Village and Schwartz Homes Housing Authority. It also provides access to local government offices like the Social Security Administration. Moreover, Van Dyke Avenue serves as a crucial link between State Highway 27 and Jersey Avenue, further intensifying traffic pressures and safety concerns at the intersection.

According to data collected by the city of New Brunswick, the intersection has witnessed over 60 motor vehicle collisions between 2019 and 2023, highlighting the urgent need for safety improvements.

"I want to thank Congressman Pallone for his hard work and dedication to improving our community," said Mayor Jim Cahill. "His commitment to public safety exemplifies the kind of leadership and vision that makes a real difference in our City. This project will greatly benefit New Brunswick by enhancing safety for all who travel through this intersection. The upgrades will not only reduce accidents but also improve the overall flow of traffic, making our City safer and more accessible for everyone."

The funding for this project was requested by Congressman Pallone in the Fiscal Year 2025 annual spending bill. Each year, members of the U.S. House may request community funding projects in their district to direct federal resources toward the biggest needs in their communities.
