Pallone Secures $750,000 for Matawan to Remove Lead Service Lines
Washington, DC – Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-06) has secured $750,000 in community project funding for the Matawan Lead Pipes Removal Project, aimed at identifying and removing all lead service lines within the Borough. The new federal funding will cover the cost of investigations, removal procedures, and public notifications of lead service lines.
Matawan has prioritized this project in 2021, starting with initial investigations. The Borough has identified 150 service lines that are made of lead so far and this is a major concern that must be addressed immediately. The Borough has proceeded with a multi-year phased project plan beginning in 2024 with an end year of 2028.
"I fought for this funding so that Matawan has the resources needed to provide clean, safe drinking water to all residents,” stated Congressman Pallone. "By eliminating potential sources of lead contamination, we're taking proactive steps to safeguard community health and restore trust in Matawan’s water supply."
The removal of lead service lines is particularly crucial for safeguarding public health, as lead exposure can have severe and lasting impacts, especially on children and pregnant women. Lead contamination in drinking water can impair neurological development and cause a range of health problems. By addressing this issue comprehensively, Matawan is setting a precedent for proactive community health management.
“Congressman Pallone's success in including $750,000 for Matawan's lead pipe removal project in the Interior and Environment Appropriations bill is a significant milestone for our community. While we still have a few steps ahead before securing the funds, this support will aid us in identifying and replacing lead service lines without placing a financial burden on the ratepayers. We are incredibly grateful for the Congressman’s unwavering dedication and support,” Mayor Joseph Altomonte.
The funding for this project was requested by Congressman Pallone in the Fiscal Year 2025 annual spending bill. Each year, members of the U.S. House may request community funding projects in their district to direct federal resources toward the biggest needs in their communities.
