Pallone Reintroduces AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act

February 5, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, today reintroduced the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2025, legislation to ensure AM radio remains accessible in all new motor vehicles. The bill directs the Department of Transportation to issue a rule that requires automakers to include AM broadcast radio as standard equipment, ensuring drivers can access essential news, entertainment, and emergency information at no additional cost.

“AM radio provides a broad variety of programming and lifesaving information during emergencies, and that’s why it’s critical we ensure all Americans can access it from their cars,” Pallone said. “In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, New Jerseyans relied on trusted AM radio stations for critical and time-sensitive alerts. This bill ensures that no driver is left without access to this vital communication tool.”

Specifically, the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2025 would:

  • Require automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in vehicles in a way that is easily accessible for consumers and available without additional fees.
  • Ensure transparency by requiring automakers to clearly disclose if a vehicle lacks access to AM radio before the rule takes effect.
  • Direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to study the role of AM radio in emergency communications, assess whether a reliable alternative exists, and evaluate the costs of such alternatives.

Pallone, a longtime advocate for strengthening public safety communications, is committed to ensuring New Jerseyans and Americans across the country continue to have access to AM radio’s trusted programming, especially in times of crisis. He will work to get his bipartisan bill signed into law this year.
