Pallone: New Jersey Will Receive $285 Million To Help Families Keep the Heat On

January 7, 2022

Pallone Included Assistance in the American Rescue Plan

Washington, DC – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) today applauded the historic funding New Jersey will receive for home energy assistance. The state will receive $285.6 million for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that helps families struggling with the costs of home heating. It is the highest amount New Jersey has ever received for the program. As Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Pallone included this funding in the American Rescue Plan that Congress passed and President Biden signed into law last year.

"As cold weather blankets our state, this funding will help families across the state keep up with their energy bills and make sure they can keep their heat on. This comes as much-needed relief for the millions of families who are spending more time at home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic," Pallone said. "I'm glad to see the American Rescue Plan deliver federal dollars to New Jersey as we continue to confront the challenges that so many people are facing right now."

The American Rescue Plan more than doubled LIHEAP funding nationally. In 2021, the Biden Administration and Congressional Democrats delivered a total of $8 billion in LIHEAP funding, including the $4.5 billion Pallone championed in the American Rescue Plan – more than doubling the typical annual appropriations. This represents the largest appropriation in a single year since the program was established in 1981. These resources are already allowing states across the country to provide more home energy relief than ever before.
