Pallone Helps to Deliver $5.6 Million in Additional Federal Funding for Carteret’s Ferry Terminal
In Fiscal Year 2023 Appropriations Bill, NJ’s 6th District Congressman Helps to Secure $6 Million for Carteret State-of-the-Art Ferry Terminal
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-New Jersey) today announced he’s helped secure an additional $5.6 Million in federal funding to construct Carteret’s new ferry terminal which will provide service between Central New Jersey to downtown Manhattan. The funding for Carteret was made possible through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program and will be used to support the construction of the Borough’s new multimodal terminal which will facilitate transfers between the ferry, NJ TRANSIT bus routes, cars, and nearby pedestrian and bicycle paths. Upon the project’s completion, Carteret Ferry Service will transport commuters to and from the World Financial Center Pier and the Midtown Terminal located at 39th Street in Manhattan.
“This is an extremely important project because it will help reduce congestion going to and from New York City and provide thousands of people in the region a more convenient way to commute,” said Congressman Pallone. “This new facility will bolster economic opportunities in Carteret and the surrounding area, acting as a vital hub for economic activity for the city. And it will be held up as a model for other communities looking to offer cleaner and better-connected modes of transportation for their municipalities.”
“After decades of underinvestment, the condition of New Jersey’s infrastructure is now finally getting better instead of worse – and today we proudly announce our support for 148 more projects in communities across the country, including Carteret,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “Through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re funding projects across the country to make roads safer, make it easier for people to move around their community, make transportation infrastructure more resilient to extreme weather, and improve supply chains to keep costs down for consumers.”
“This is a highly competitive grant to which towns, counties and states from all over the country, can apply and compete,” Mayor Reiman said. “It’s an extremely difficult grant to obtain, so we are very grateful to President Biden and the U.S. Department of Transportation for investing infrastructure funds into this intermodal ferry terminal. This program would not be possible without the implementation of the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure bill championed by Congressional leaders like Frank Pallone.”
“This is truly an exciting time for Carteret,” Mayor Reiman said. “After years of studies and permitting through what seems like the endless bureaucracy of government agencies, we will soon reinstate ferry service which will safely and efficiently deliver commuters from Carteret and the surrounding area every day to New York City.”
The new RAISE grant funding builds on $6 million in federal funding Pallone previously secured for the Carteret Ferry Terminal in the Fiscal Year 2023 Appropriations bill and an additional $6 million awarded through the Federal Transit Administration’s Passenger Ferry Grant Program to purchase a ferry vessel.
The overall vision for Carteret ferry terminal site includes public access to the waterfront along the Arthur Kill; construction of two commercial docks along with the supporting infrastructure; and the development of a 1.2 million square-foot film production studio. The terminal will also include 150,000 square feet of ancillary retail and hotel space and construction of both a $47 million marina next to the project site and dredging for commercial port activities.
