Pallone Applauds SCOTUS Decision Upholding Access to Mifepristone

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court’s ruling in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, which unanimously rejected an effort by conservative activists to undermine the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decades-old approval of mifepristone as a safe and effective medication:

“Today’s decision is a victory for science-based decision-making and a relief to millions of women across the country. As a result, mifepristone will remain available as a safe and effective medication for those who need it. 

“I’m grateful the Supreme Court rejected this effort by ideological extremists attempting to substitute their judgement for scientific rigor and medical expertise. This case should have never reached our nation’s highest court in the first place—and it’s especially troubling that it was supported by 147 Republican members of Congress. We must remain vigilant against continued attempts to undermine access to medication abortion.

“While today is a major victory, there is no doubt that conservative extremists will continue to try to undermine access to medication abortion and further attempt to erode women’s reproductive rights. That’s why we must keep fighting to restore Roe v. Wade’s protections in federal statute by passing by the Women’s Health Protection Act into law under a Democratic majority next Congress.”
