Pallone Statement on Resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn

February 14, 2017

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-06) issued the following statement on the resignation of Michael Flynn as National Security Advisor.

“Michael Flynn’s time as National Security Advisor was the shortest in American history, but his resignation was long overdue. Since the White House was informed by the Acting Attorney General weeks ago about Flynn’s engagement with the Russians, it is fair to question whether he would have been forced to step down if not for the public outcry over his conduct.

“As one of President Trump’s closest and longest-tenured advisors, Flynn’s resignation over covert discussions with the Russian ambassador to the United States raises serious questions about who directed his actions and who knew what he was doing. With a lack of transparency from the new Administration, this may just be the tip of the iceberg. A thorough and impartial investigation is needed to determine just how deep the Russian government and its interests are embedded within the Trump Administration.

“Flynn’s resignation also reminds the American people of the many questionable personnel decisions President Trump has made. His Press Secretary began his time in the press room with a series of obvious falsehoods. His White House Counselor has peddled Ivanka Trump’s merchandise from the White House. The man President Trump wants in the White House Situation Room for every major national security decision is a known white nationalist. These are not the “best and brightest” our country has to offer – they are undeserving of a visit to the White House, let alone senior positions in the Administration.

“I will continue to urge a thorough investigation into Russian engagement with this Administration, and to closely monitor the actions of President Trump’s most trusted advisors.”
