Pallone Announces $400,000 in Brownfields Grants for Asbury Park

May 20, 2016

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) announced that Asbury Park will receive two grants from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields Program, totaling $400,000. The community-wide hazardous substances grant funds will be used to conduct environmental site assessments, and prepare two cleanup plans. The funds will also be used to support community outreach activities.

“The Brownfields program has served communities well, helping make them healthier and more livable,” said Pallone. “I’m pleased Asbury Park will be able to use this funding to identify sites that need improvement. This funding is essential to help clean up contaminated sites and ensure that the environment and surrounding residents are kept safe from pollutants.”

Pallone helped author the legislation creating the Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfields Program with the late Congressman Paul Gillmor (R-OH) in 2001. President Bush signed the bill into law in January 2002. The program provides funding to help communities prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields – properties which, if expanded, redeveloped, or reused risk exposure to a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
